Liberty Division Circle K members serving meals on July 22nd

During this event, we served meals to the elderly at the Manny Cantor Center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Upon our entrance, we were greeted with smiling faces that continuously thanked us for bringing a few extra hands to help out. The staff filled us in on what we were going to do for the next few hours and showed us how to properly set the table for lunch. While we waited for the seniors to grab seats with their friends, we placed pieces of watermelon on plates and were treated with pieces of advice from one staff member.

He began his small talk by asking what colleges we went to, and then congratulating us for continuing our educations. He explained that he did not have such opportunities, but that he was working at the Manny cantor Center because it was a more enjoyable environment to work in. Before beginning to serve the seniors, he sent us off with a word of wisdom: “Those that work hard will receive what they deserve.”

We worked in teams of two and walked up and down the room placing a plate full of salmon, broccoli and rice in front of them. I couldn’t help but grin at their grateful smiles and endless stream of thank. Before we knew it we had served everyone in the room and were invited to sit and enjoy the meal. As I sat down and began talking with a handful of people that volunteered with us, I thought back to how the seniors were chatting in manner similar to ours. They enjoyed a meal with their friends the same way I was able to sit with mine. We had such a fun time that we had to be reminded that the room was needed for another event. There’s no doubt that it was one of the friendliest volunteering events we had ever attended.
